The Australian Synchrotron regularly holds tours, laboratory sessions, seminars and workshops tailored to the needs of existing users, new users, and tertiary and high school students.
AS tours, presentations and hands-on sessions help existing users improve their synchrotron expertise, show prospective users how synchrotron techniques can advance their research goals, and encourage tertiary and secondary students to consider further studies or careers in science.
For example, student sessions actively engage participants, showing them that high-level, world-class science is taking place in Australia and that a science career in Australia is a viable option.
The August 2012 issue of Lightspeed has several education-related articles:
- This laboratory has classes - The new education laboratory in the National Centre for Synchrotron Science (NCSS) building at the AS can comfortably accommodate a whole class and a wider range of experiments.
- La Trobe students visit far-IR and MX - Nanotechnology students from La Trobe University visit the Australian Synchrotron every year as part of their third-year synchrotron science and technology unit.
- High school students visit AS - Some high schools bring student groups to experience first-hand what it’s like to do synchrotron experiments and learn more about the kinds of research questions that different synchrotron techniques can help answer.
- New users seminar July 2012 - More than 200 prospective new users attended the Synchrotron and Neutron New Users Symposium.
- IR workshop is MASSIVE - Users of synchrotron infrared microspectroscopy techniques learnt how to open up new horizons in analysing IR microspectroscopy data from biological single cells and tissue sections.
- Our 2012 Open Day is not far away - The annual Australian Synchrotron Open Day is on Sunday 14 October 2012 from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
