During a planned machine shutdown yesterday, we successfully completed the first phase of the network modifications, which isolated the machine network from the rest of the facility network. This will ensure that future component failures, as occurred last week, will not affect machine operations, while we continue to prepare for the complete decommission of the old hardware.

The Australian Synchrotron has experienced a rare but significant machine shut down, as a result of a failing in our core network infrastructure. The failing occurred in a component for which replacement plans had been made in our January shutdown. The replacement was already delivered and awaiting configuration during a longer shutdown period to minimise the impact on our users.
